the problem is that dpkg does not keep track of the original "pristine"
version of the conffile, so there's no 3rd version for the 3 way merge.

some time ago i brought this up on dpkg-dev and even provided patches
providing exactly this feature, but the dpkg maintainer didn't really
seem interested.
