I wonder if the choice of enabled video card makes a difference.  Some MBPs
(mine is an MBP5,3) have dual video cards which you can switch between via the
power management preferences.  They're labeled "Better Battery Life" and
"Higher Performance".  This corresponds to the nVidia GeForce 9400M and 9600M
GT cards.
