I have experienced this recently with my Epson scanner on Karmic with
-updates. The device got detected and showed up in lsusb, but the
computer couldn't talk to it, it always failed with IO Error. After
power cycling the scanner multiple times, it worked again. This has just
happened recently, before I was able to use the same scanner on Karmic
without problems.

Cheers
