There's some good discussion going on in the other thread with the
derivatives front desk list, but there is still some Ubuntu specific
discussion needed. I know and agree with all the arguments for pushing
new packages through Debian first. This isn't a new idea, and I think
we've been generally been getting a lot better with doing this. But
we're still left with some questions that need to be resolved directly
in Ubuntu. What to do about packages that have a good reason for going
directly into Ubuntu? And how do we manage our current processes and
infrastructure for this purpose?

We can continue to nudge people towards Debian, but the reality is
that as long as we have a process for accepting new packages people
are going to use it. There are over 100 packages sitting on REVU, most
of which have gotten no developer attention. This is obviously
disheartening for potential new contributors. Simply saying we need to
send people to Debian isn't going to resolve our internal issues.
