If you want to do it without a redirect it also seems to work if you just keep the Alias in /etc/apache2/conf.d/mediawiki.conf commented out and replace /var/www with a symlink to /usr/share/mediawiki/.

I had a similar problem with my moinmoin appliance but had to use another solution since this didn't work with Python but it seems to work with PHP quite well.
