To me it sounds 90% related, though. If you want to have a package
branch merged into the official one, this is pretty much exactly what
we call "sponsoring" right now, isn't it?

It'll still involve the same rough process (find a developer who
reviews and acknowledges your changes), just the mechanics will be
different (and probably simpler, but at least more stringent)
