We recommend using an LDAP setup to achieve the same results.

The generic rationale for supporting only the recommended way of doing
things is to lessen the burden of maintenance, which for an LTS release
on server is significant. However this is not a hard rule, since many
more factors (like, in this case, integration with existing
environments) should also be taken into account. That's why we gather
feedback from the community of that list :)
