Hi Cody,

The primary way to shutdown and restart in Ubuntu at the moment is via the
fast-user-switch-applet. This currently works by sending a call to
Consolekit to stop the machine, and is slightly undesirable as the users
session is not terminated properly. However, up until yesterday this has
been acceptable, as gnome-session hasn't supported properly saving the users
session on shutdown and restart anyway.

This has changed now, and gnome-session now properly terminates a users
session on shutdown and restart (since yesterday), but you currently need to
use the old session dialog to benefit from this (and this is hidden from the
System menu by default now).

This change will allow the fast-user-switch-applet to shutdown the machine
using the session manager, so that the shutdown will have the same
functionality as calling it from the old session dialog.

Note that gnome-session already provides a DBus method for a non-interactive
logout.

Regards
Chris
