| I am interested to hear from GTK, Qt, etc. developers whether this is

| equivalent. I am conscious, though, that many applications do not use
| common dialogs and instead implement their own. I do agree that this
| would be the most effective hint, if feasible.

At the risk of introducing too much complexity: we could do this as a
fuse filesystem which would pop up notification bubbles whenever you
saved something to ~ (and which didn't match an «ignored files»
pattern).

This would have the advantage of being completely desktop-agnostic and
work for non-GTK, non-Qt applications as well.
