Traditionally, bandwidth has always been measured in multiples of 10,
not multiples of 2.

Well, KiB, MiB, etc. are on track to gain SI & ISO status once the
current SI (and later ISO) standardisation track is finalized...
(They are CIE "standards" already.)
BTW: they don't really confuse users IME, quite the contrary (and my
experience with using KiB/MiB/GiB/etc. predates the existence of
Ubuntu!).
