 Coincidentally, I had the very same discussion with my sponsoree for
 libthai who also tried removing the *.la files at my request; he
 discovered that this is a documented requirement of KLibLoader at least
 in KDE 3:

 I'm guessing that *.la files are only helpful on some platforms but are
 made a requirement on all by KLibLoader.

 QLibrary doesn't require *.la files.
