siretart at faui44a:~ $ apt-cache show mutt
[...]
Provides: mail-reader, imap-client
Depends: libc6 (>= 2.5-0ubuntu1), libdb4.4, libgnutls13 (>= 1.5.3-0), libgpg-error0 (>= 1.4), libgpgme11 (>= 1.0.1), libidn11 (>= 0.5.18), libncursesw5 (>= 5.4-5), libsasl2-2
Recommends: exim4 | mail-transport-agent, locales, mime-support
Suggests: urlview, aspell | ispell, gnupg, mixmaster, openssl, ca-certificates

How do you come to that conclusion? It even prefers exim, but is
installable with any package providing 'mail-transport-agent'.

Oh right, because msmtp doesn't. Worth a bug report, but I fear that has
been (not) done on purpose.
