If you haven't already, have a look at
http://www.ubuntu.com/community/participate .
Like you, I too am a programmer who has become interested in helping
with Ubuntu. Here's what I've found to work for me so far:
1) Get an account with http://launchpad.net/
2) Get a GPG key into the keyring and sign a copy of the Ubuntu Code of
Conduct.
3) Learn about Debian packages and the art of packaging. See
https://help.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/packagingguide/C/index.html and the
helpful information at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MOTU/School
3) Look at the buglists in launchpad's Malone for your favorite software
packages, and look for ways to work on bugs that you care about.
(Actually, I pretty much sit on #ubuntu-bugs and listen for bugs that
seem interesting enough for me to look more deeply into; I also notice
the occaisional bug on my own and sometimes try to write a patch for
it).
4) Help package software that's not yet in Ubuntu
(https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MOTU/Packages/Candidates - I haven't started
doing this yet)
