I just tried it and the result is the following:
- NM tries feels responsible for the manually configured interface until
the next reboot (or just click on "Deactivate Nerwork" in NM then
"Activate Network")
- After that the interface is non-existant for NM.
- This of course creates the problem that NM tries to configure WLAN
connections even if you are already connected to the manually configured
LAN.
So, you have a valid point here...
I'll file bugs for the issues above.
