Isn't the problem with that that bash goes above and beyond POSIX? Some
people use bash only syntax without even realising they are doing so
because it Just Works[tm] on all the linux boxes they use.

So bash may be POSIX compliant, as may dash, but the extra bits that
bash adds don't work with dash. That seems to be the source of some of
the confusion on this thread, afaics.
