I down loaded and installed kubuntu knot3 today using the alternate
installer iso. All in all, it's usable but note the following
"opportunities":
(1) installer complained about not finding a kernel, but obviously a
kernel was found somehow.
(2) installation and initial reboot were uneventful and speedy.
(3) As soon as I was up and running, I did apt-get update ... upgrade
using the default sources.list. A fairly large number of packages were
installed. Some time while I was out of the room, this led to a screen
lockup (current window filled with garbage and kde not responsive.
(4) I switched to an alternate console and tried ctl-alt-delete. This
led to a "you have reached a state where the system cannot respond
here is a shell" message. I entered 'sync; sync;sync;' and powered off
the box. This condition is permanent; all shutdowns fail in this
fashion.
(5) Upon reboot I get 'usplash - no usable theme found ...' and a lot
of garbage messages, but kdm does start and the system runs fine. I'm
continuing to install packages of interest - firefox - mysql5 -
postgresql8.1 - php5 and friends - apache2, and all appears to be
kosher.
(6) Something about the xorg setup is hokey. When I drag a window to a
new location, the drag is erratic and seems to move further than I
moved the mouse. Unlike the smooth drag operations on Dapper.
(7) A firefox problem for upstream. Bon Echo does not allow import of
bookmarks (file import fields grayed out, but copying in
bookmarks.html from a prior setup works.
As regards (3) - (5), one would think this late in the edgy process
that developers would actually be testing this stuff before releasing
it for upgrade.
All in all, it's looking good.
