Does ubuntu plan to use grub2 as the default boot loader?

My understanding is that grub 0.x will no longer be maintained upstream, so
yes, Ubuntu will move to grub2. However, there is currently no concrete
plan or timeline for this transition.

That depends on whether grub2's CD support is as broadly compatible as
isolinux.
