Sorry, I made an error. I am using two computers with Kubuntu and I took
this information from the wrong machine. Here's what I have:

System description
Hardware: IBM 300PL Pentium III 500MHz, 512MB RAM, 60 GB HD, CDROM,
CDRW, 2 network cards
  Software: Kubuntu 2.6.15-26-386

I'm tried to install Kubuntu on 386. I played with the physical
configuration of the machine to try to solve the problem. I was only
able to install when I've tried to install using another CD unit. So, I
think this here something with this unit and Linux. It works well with
Windows. I think Windows has the drivers for it but the material is not
perfectly Atapi so Linux is having a hard time.

How much I am sure that it is the drive that's crashing the system? I
would say 95% sure. What else it could be? I could the combination of
the unit and the PC itself but I works with Windows. It could be not
just this drive but a family of similar drive having the same problem
but this is not much different. I don't know what else it could be.
