I remember seeing this question and a response to it that basically
insulted the manufacturer (dell), dismissed the claim, and concluded
that there was no such need to run a software for cpu fans.
Even though the idea to use software to run fans seems weird, I don't
know if the answer was accurate. However, I'd expect anything from big
companies that work with MS to make it more difficult to run anything
other than MS OS on their products.
did you check out launchpad to see if anyone filed a bug on that (best
search term would be "i8kmon" afaik)?
