For the record, that's exactly my opinion as well. As a developer, I
of course know how to call nvidia-glx-config, but that's totally
undiscoverable for users (they might not even be aware of an
alternative). I prefer the 'free driver by default' and a discoverable
and easy activation, too (installer option or first-login
notification).
