screen reader

Hi I am a blind computer user.
I got the live cd but I can't get the screen reader to work.
My daughter says it comes up with a message speech unavailable.
Anyone know how I can get this to work.
I tried to get the live dvd image, but 
all I got was a very small iso file that took about two seconds to download.
