Thick client and unionfs on / ?

Hi,

I've got a thick client setup with 24 stations mounting / on nfs, I'm trying 
to edit initrd init to mount / on a unionfs, but apparently the actual root 
mount is done within the init executables in initrd, so I'm finding it 
difficult to change / to mount the unionfs. Perhaps I'm overlooking obvious 
(unionfs is new to me). Anyone have any ideas?

I realize I'll have to mount certain things like /proc /sys inside the union 
mountpoint which it seems isn't going to be a problem from the init script.

I suspect this is what the livecd does.
