The preferences suggestion only works for GNOME applications. As for the 
USB, I don't know. Think about it this way, if I plugged in a USB sound 
card, we may assume, that I want to use it and make it the default. It 
worked great while I was using a USB Audigy NX 2. This time it broke 
just because it couldn't tell that the device was not really a sound card.
