C compiler cannot create executables

I have seen this error before during autoconf, and it constantly eludes me as to
the solution. Situation:
Fresh default dapper flight 5 install on Powerbook G3 (pismo, 2000 firewire). I
followed this with apt-get install cvs and apt-get install gcc. What else do I
need to do so I can build emacs?
