Do Dapper kernels not support vesafb? It seems not.

Just iterating what Matthew said, 0x027e is not a valid vesafb mode.
Try "vga=ask" to see what is valid.

They patched it. If you include what vga chipset you are using, how
much video memory you have, and what video modes (w/ color depth) you
are trying to achieve, maybe someone could help you a little more.
