Simple: The new theme (gtkrc) depends on a new version of the
Clearlooks engine, that uses cairo to render some widgets. When you
upgrade, you still have the old version of clearlooks loaded into
memory, and there are some incompatible gtkrc directives in the new
theme. That's why you need to restart your session.

About the colors: It's still probably work in progress, so don't
panic. The overall feeling is good, it just needs more work. The point
is that this list is probably not the most appropriate place to
express this feedback... I do want to make more comments about the
artwork in general, but I'll avoid doing this in this list :)
