dumb question: tracking kernel back to sources that built it.

I don't know a whole lot about Ubuntu kernels specifically, but I have
compiled my fair share of other kernels. It sounds to me like you only have
the vanilla sources, instead of the Ubuntu sources. Did you get the sources
from the apt repository, or from kernel.org? If you got them from kernel.org
(and maybe even if you got them from apt), you probably need to get the
Ubuntu patches. I'm not sure where to find those, but here is a link you
might want to try:
http://packages.ubuntulinux.org/dapper/admin/
Also, perhaps the sources already come with the patches, but they aren't
applied yet? Look around in the source tree for them.
