i would like to agree with this. its a good opinion piece from the
developer himself. I would have to agree with him on this. if
zeroconf/avahi/some other mDNS solution is to be included, it shouldn't
be off/disabled by default. I've long been baffled as to why
avahi-daemon isn't a default installed package, when the dapper versions
of both rhyhmbox and vino will advertise/browse wonderfully once its
installed. Well, I can understand why, i just do not agree, rather.
Especially since when a new user looks at/reads about rhythmbox, he/she
will see/find the preference pane about sharing, enable it, and watch
nothing at all happen, since avahi-daemon is not installed...
just my two cents. i have been following this discussion, but held my
touge since I after all am not a developer for ubuntu, but after reading
lennarts post, decided to chip in on it.
zeroconf is a great technology, and, since edgyis supposed to be just
that bleeding edge feature rich, and not super stable like dapper, I
say, enable it. I'm sure if people don't like it there will be plenty of
complaints. If its not enabled, tons of users will/might miss out on a
great, simplifying technology.
regardless, edgy is thus far shaping up nicely. keep up the excelent
work everyone. hopefully some day, once school is no longer riding me
hard, I too can get some work done for ubuntu
