But then why use a firewall at all ?

what benefit is in application calling

{
 listen(x,y);
 tell_firewall_to_open(PORT_FOO);
}

versus a simple listen(x,y) ?

Or will this preferences be handled by some system software ?
Which will then configure the FW for each application ?
