-1 from me.

I don't see any real need to even debate enabling it by default. It
makes good sense for an application to enable it WHEN IT IS REQUIRED!

When you pop open Rhythmbox, and go to sharing, and hit Enabled, it
should enable Avahi, after the appropriate security considerations.

Also it should probably be disabled when no application is using it.
Avahi might already support this, in fact.
