Well in that case it sounds like you have told your bios to boot from
the second hard disk instead of the first.
I still tried your suggestion:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
root hd(0,0)

Error 11: Unrecognized device string
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

hd(0,0) is malformed. it should be (hd0,0) if anything so i tried that:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
root (hd0,0)
Filesystem type unknown, partition type 0x7
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.15-12-386 root=/dev/hdb3 ro quiet splash
Error 17: Cannot mount selected partition
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
0x7 is an ntfs partition and (hd0,0) my first partition on my first
disk is windowsXP (ntfs)

besides as stated in my bug report:
https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/grub/+bug/6550
and in my earlier emails, chrooting into the installation and
installing the earlier kernel allows me to boot fine. - with root
(hd1,2) as it should be.

Is there anything in the first part of booting that could stop it from
ncompressing the kernel image?
