Sounds excellent.  Could you put together a wiki-page to turn into a
specification, with all the ideas in one place on:

  http://wiki.ubuntu.com/

I know GNOME upstream have some plans for automating the system.  If it's
not going to make the next GNOME release it may be worth just getting on and
adding what's needed in time for Dapper freeze.

To start you off, here's a script that tries [quite hard] to guess the
Debian source-package from the pid of a running-process:
