auto-configured at installation. This doesn't appear to be happening,
which surprises me since I remember Mandrake doing this successfully some
years ago. Is there some reason why it appears not to "work" in Ubuntu ?

As another #ubuntu person who has spent a lot of time on the channel
over the last year, (although rather less recently), I would say the
questions Chris mentions are indeed the most common. Wireless crops up
constantly too, of course...
