If you click on the little icon at the left hand side of the URL, that
selects the whole URL without affecting the clipboard.  You can therefore
click on the icon, press backspace/delete and then middle click paste into
the URL bar.

I agree that I instinctively want to click in the bar itself and have the
whole thing selected---last time I was unfortunately enough to use
Microsoft's browser, I think it had changed to this behaviour too.

One thing I would like it to be able to middle-click paste on top the little
icon have that change the page--same effect as middle-clicking on the page
itself does and which we have disabled in Ubuntu.
