kde removing gnome (and vice versa)

I haven't seen this come up before, but sorry if it has

While we have packages for ubuntu-desktop and kubuntu-desktop, these
install the 2 desktops side by side. How feasible would it be to have a
package that installs kde and removes gnome, or installs gnome and
removes kde?

I'm sure there's a stack of things that could cause problems, but I was
wondering if there was an excessive amount of them.
