Yes, exactly (dammit now I wish this went to the list ;-)

All the docs I found involve the (gack) registry, which you can only
examine with "gst-inspect alsasink".  Absolutely no docs on how to
configure the damn thing.  AFAICT the settings live in
".gstreamer-0.10/registry.i486.xml" but I can't find any of the
interesting ones like "device", "device-name", "period-count" etc
anywhere.

This is a f**cking mess - how is this any better than the Windows
registry again?

Yes, it's clearly not there yet.  I think we should check back in 6
months.
