python dependencies structure

I see that Debian is moving from
python-libname (fake empty) depends on python-2.[34]-libname (actual
libraries for python 2.3 or 2.4) schema to python-libname provides
python2.[34]-libname. Since Ubuntu has always proclaimed strong python
support (even sometimes against all reason and sanity ;) ) what is the
development team stance on this? Personally, I think the new Debian
naming scheme is cleaner then it used to be.
