eth assignment problem

Hi there,
I recently tried to use a ubuntu installation on user mode linux and I
ran into a strange problem.
Normally, an assignment of
./vmlinux eth0=tuntap,tap1
results in eth0 set up inside the UML instance according to the
assignment of tap1. This setup works with several distributions like
debian sarge, fedora core 5 etc.
Ubuntu changes the assignment to eth2 - which would be the next free eth
number on the host server.
It looks like the uml client assigning eth numbers whilst knowing about
the hosts eth interfaces and incrementing the eth number for a free
one.
Can anyone point to the cause of this behaviour, it must be something in
Ubuntu Dapper that causes this because it works with all other
distributions I tried.
Remarks:
- The problem does not occur with kernels numbered 2.6.14 or lower
- The user mode linux team hasn't changed anything in this regard in the
last few months
Kind regards,
Peter
