Automatic GRUB installation only if GRUB isn't already installed

The MS bootloader can boot several Windows installations IIRC, like
2000 and XP. It can even be convinced to boot a Linux kernel, with
manual intervention, but I'm digressing.

Yup, this is what happened to my father-in-law who has WIndows,
Kurumin and Kalengo (two Knoppix derivatives) on his desktop. I don't
think it is less confusing though! I am still trying to move him to
Kubuntu ;-)
Ideally, we want to find out what boot loader is in there, where it
points to, and whether there are some boot loaders on the pointed
partitions. Once we have all that, we can automatically create a menu
that rules them all, ideally on the start of our partition, so we
don't mess with anything. Maybe we could install on the MBR if the
current boot loader is neither lilo nor grub...
