I would prefer having an icon in the notification area appearing when
an usb device is plugged in that turns orange or red while data is
being written or still needs to be written and green when it is safe
to remove. That way all the warning messages would be unneeded and
there is na hassle with unmounting, something most users don't have a
clue about why it is even necessairy.
An error message could pop up then when a user removes his device
while the icon is red, telling him that he should do this again and
asking to reconnect the device in order to repair the possible
corrupted data.
I think with this solution requires the least technical knowledge from
the user and the least steps, so it is more likely to be done right.
