usplash 0.4-1 works for me on my T42 during shutdown, but it doesn't seem to
start successfully from initramfs (I get a text-mode boot).

After booting with init=top, usplash complains about some missing devices
(/dev/mem, /dev/tty0, /dev/zero), which I created and tried again, but
svgalib still doesn't initialize ("Not running in a graphics capable
console, and unable to find one.").
