And then, when they buy a scanner and plug it in and it doesn't work and
they can't load the drivers from the CD, then what do they do?

The problem can't be solved solely in the ubuntu-installer, but in
general, work needs to be done in the hardware realm. A new user won't
know to install SANE, so having it pre-installed for when they do decide
to plug in that scanner is handy.

Even beyond that, when I plugged in my old scanner, I still needed to
manually configure it with the firmware file. So... As I said, a lot of
work needs to be done on hardware support - or more correctly, ease of
configurability.

Ideally, plugging in the scanner that requires a firmware file would ask
to browse to the firmware file and copy it to the required location.
This would allow users to download the firmware file or browse to the
CD-ROM.

The problem isn't only scanners though, it's just the example you used.
