Issues with video - both in x and usplash.

I have issues when ubuntu is installed to the hard drive from live (the
initrd is recreated by the command dpkg-reconfigure
linux-image-$LINUXKERNEL).

I's kinda hard to explain the issues, and I don't know exactly where I
should post it.

The first one is usplash-related. I boot from hard drive, and usplash
seems borked. I have this issue with via video boards (those integrated
with msi amd64 motherboards), with ATI Radeon X300, with nvidia geforce
4 mx400 and with some integrated sis ones.

There's a picture of it at:

The second one I noticed only with the ATI board. X looks weird, as if
it went to 256-color mode, and there are some parts of the screen with
lost areas.
It's better to see than to explain.

area on the upper panel, and the background colors. (ignore the panel
color).

This second one is bizarre. It's not the case that the display is in 256
color (it is set to 24-bit only). And changing to another VT and back
seems to fix it.
