IMHO it is more a case of stupid dependencies. "Use apt because it does
not track automatically installed packages correctly" is not a good
solution. 
There is a similar situation with totem-gstreamer vs. totem-xine, and in
this case, ubuntu-desktop depends on either, so that users can choose.
