I don't wanna go there on this list, and I am a supporter of the Gnome 2
direction, but I think in this case you are giving too little credit to
users. And the screensaver is a great place to let people play with
stuff. Remember people -bought- screensavers fo Win 3.1

Currently it's not easy at all because ubuntu-desktop depends on
gnome-screensaver alone. Installing xscreensaver removes ubuntu-desktop
and his takes a lot of automatically installed packages with it
