If you install xscreensaver, gnome-screensaver and the ubuntu-desktop
metapackage are the only things removed. This does not effect anything
else.



However, when upgrading to the next version of Ubuntu, you would need
to re-install the ubuntu-desktop package (thus removing xscreensaver)
temporarily to ensure the upgrade runs smoothly. After that, you are
free to re-install xscreensaver if you'd like.
