I'm not sure this is it, but I've recently upgraded fontconfig to the
version in Breezy, and it changed the default font aliases. Now
"Sans" refers to Bitstream Vera Sans, while in Hoary "Sans" used to
refer to Verdana.

I've added this to ~/.fonts.conf to get Verdana back (Bitstream Vera
Sans does not have all the glyphs necessary for Lithuanian):

  <?xml version="1.0"?><!DOCTYPE fontconfig SYSTEM "fonts.dtd">
  <fontconfig>
    <alias>
      <family>serif</family>
      <prefer>
        <family>Georgia</family>
        <family>Bitstream Vera Serif</family>
        <family>Times New Roman</family>
        <family>Nimbus Roman No9 L</family>
        <family>Luxi Serif</family>
        <family>Times</family>
        <family>Frank Ruehl</family>
        <family>Kochi Mincho</family>
