Broken Dell BIOS. Pretty much the same thing happens in Windows (boot, 
press the lid switch while it's displaying the 16 colour boot logo, let 
go, marvel at how the screen stays blank until the Windows drivers 
initialise and switch the screen back on).

Once you're under X, we can work around that.
