Huh, I've never heard of us stomping configs before.  If you
dpkg-reconfigure, it'll get stomped, but it backs it up and tells you
where.

My best guess as to what's going wrong is that gcc4 has ruined
dual-screen support (VGA routing ends up getting screwed, so the BIOS
tries to execute invalid code when you init VBE; not only non-trivial to
debug, but occurs entirely randomly, and usually when you have no time
to debug it, but instead nead your frigging laptop to work -- not that
I'm bitter, really), so your server's crashing out on startup?
