It can be a good or bad thing depending on the organization.

We had it at my work for a while and it got out of hand and was removed...

My mechanic uses IM and it seems to help them communicate customer needs better.
Having a window with all their messages in one place works better than
misc. stickies and pieces of paper to get lost.
